Chapter 11

Becker’s on the phone as soon as we’re in the door. “I need clearance. I’m on a case.”

I beeline to the kitchen counter where I’ll have enough space to lay out the missing journal pages. They’d become a puzzle that I couldn’t solve because it was like we’d gotten one piece, each from a different set. One of the pages turns transparent with a large grease stain. I snatch it up, dabbing at the offending spot.

“Ali!” I hold it up to the light, checking for damage. “For the love of… Ali! Get your butt in here.”

She shuffles around the corner from Becker’s room, rubbing her eyes. “Hells. People are sleeping here.” She blinks at Mica. “Oh hello. I have muffins.” She opens the freezer to reveal a wall of baked goods separated into plastic bags.

“Ali, there’s butter all over the counter.”

“Baking is a messy art. I got up as much as I could.” She huffs and mumbles under her breath. “I’m guessing you want the space for some math project.” She wets a sponge. Soapy water drips from the edges.

I gather the remaining pages. “Careful. These are our only leads.”

She snorts. “Relax. If you take it down a notch maybe you’ll be able to see what’s right in front of you.”

Impatient, I speed-read the pages, and my eye catches on a date. Something from earlier today. Right around when Becker and I took Jack’s case. I take it to the small round white table that serves as a dining area and set it down, doing some calculations in my head.

I pull out a bag of lemon ricotta cornbread muffins to thaw. It would be breakfast time soon anyway. My stomach growls, so I grab one and gnaw on it.

Ali shakes her head. “You’re like a Furby after midnight.”

Jack drags his feet into the kitchen from the living room. “Gremlin. It’s a gremlin, but don’t say it in mixed company. Not everyone thinks of them as appropriate. They can be very messy when picking apart human flesh.” He double takes when he sees the other oracle. “What are you doing here, Mica? I left the house to keep you all safe.”

Mica stands next to a lamp, pretty much blending in with the furniture. His eggshell-color shirt matches the paint color exactly. I almost forgot he was standing there until he moved to acknowledge Jack.

Mica scratches his elbow. “Zoey’s had more visions. I’m next after you.”

Jack lowers his head. “I’m sorry.” He peeks up under his lashes. “What about Danny? Does he know? Should I call him?”

Mica crosses his arms. His features go tight. “Of course he knows. We don’t have secrets.”

Whoa. Some sort of oracle drama was going down.

Jack’s face goes hard, but then softens. “I understand. I let go of my right to a space in his life, but I still care about him.” He reaches for Mica, but thinking better of it, he places his hand on the counter. He leans his weight into the tile top, creating the illusion of the counter keeping him stable.
